Medication Management, Process and Practice

This is a half day  course focussing on the legal aspects of Medication Mangement and in particualr ensuring stuff undertstand the processes and Practices involved 

It is of vital importance that all staff responsible for administration of medication receive appropriate training and can demonstrate that they are competent in this area of practice.

 Course Objectives

To enable the participants to gain an understanding of:

  • The Legal and professional responsibilities associated with administering medication
  • The process of consent and describe issues of consent
  • How to comply with good practice to safely administer medication
  • Complete a Medication Administered Record

Medicine Administration responsibilities and accountability

Legal issues including: -

  • The Medicines Act 1968
  • The Misuse of Drugs Act 1971
  • Mental Capacity Act 2005

Types of prescription including Enteral feeding (PEG) etc.

Medication Errors, process and outcomes for the service user and staff

Use of as required (prn) medications

Action in the case of side effects / overdose 

Record Keeping and MAR charts

Reporting concerns

Mitigation against complacency
