It is of vital importance that all staff responsible for administration of medication receive appropriate training and can demonstrate that they are competent in this area of practice. Furthermore, Care providers should ensure that all care staff have an annual review of their knowledge, skills and competencies relating to managing and administering medicines.
This course is designed to enable an sound knowledge base for the Administration of medication in Residential Care setting and how to undertake assessment of competence for staff
NICE SC1 and NG67 recommends that all staff who support people’s medicines needs have an annual review of their knowledge, skills and competencies relating to managing and administering medicines. As the person assessing staff should be competent in medicines support tasks delivered by their service the first part of the course covers the basics of medication administration and they will require assessment by a competent person
Course Objectives
To enable the participants to gain an understanding of:
- Overview of the Administration of medication in a Residential Care Setting
- Awareness of how to competency assess carers when administering medication.
- The Assessment Process
- How to check for Competency
- Recording keeping
- How to undertake an Assessment of Competence and skills practice
The training is complemented with a competency assessment booklet which managers utilise to confirm that staff are implementing the training they have received in practice – thus ensuring a high standard of care in accordance with NICE guidelines.
