ADHD in the Criminal Justice System

In November 2021, Takeda organised a policy round table, ADHD in Prisons: A case for change, which brought together key stakeholders from across the clinical, policy, advocacy, criminal justice system (CJS) and political community. The meeting gathered a series of insights into the particular challenges for people with ADHD in the CJS, which were categorised into broad themes one of which was; “Understanding of, and training on, ADHD – for prison staff to be able to help manage patients with ADHD and provide support in accessing care”

This course provides the recommended training for Prison Staff to meet the recommendations in the report.

Course Objectives

To be able to identify offenders with ADHD and gain an understanding of the different ways in which it can present. To understand some of the potential causes of ADHD

To describe the characteristics of ADHD and how they are used in diagnosis. To describe the risk factors and brain changes associated with ADHD.

To raise awareness of neurodiversity in prison and help strengthen approaches for identifying and supporting those with neurodivergent needs.

To have an understanding of the different subtypes of ADHD and how they present (e.g. combined subtype, inattentive subtype and hyperactive-impulsive subtype).

To outline key approaches to managing ADHD, (including medication and dietary advice) with reference to their scientific evidence base.

An overview of the screening assessment for ADHD

An understanding of the requirements for aftercare requirements and the resettlement passport.

To be able to define key terms in the field of ADHD research
